The next big thing for India is 6G and its launch is not far away.
Prime minister Narendra Modi has indicated how India is now “preparing” for 6G. And why is it crucial now for the government to accelerate its efforts? Simply because of the potential that 6G has to transform the way the world communicates, making everything faster and easier. 6G is scheduled to launch in 2030, giving India six years of preparation time.
But the other global giants have already begun to take big steps in preparing for this addition. The main area of preparation for 6G is intellectual property and China is currently leading in 6G IP. Other countries, including the United States and South Korea, have also taken significant steps to gain a foothold in the 6G IP space. China, already a world leader in 5G, is aggressively rushing to build IP. Chinese companies Huawei, ZTE and China Mobile hold important patents related to 6G. Until 2023, Chinese participation in this area was around 40 percent. In the United States, large technology companies such as Qualcomm, Intel and Apple They are expected to play an important role in the development of 6G IP. Federal Communications and the National Science Foundation are funding 6G research. South Korea, led by Samsung and LG, is also actively involved in 6G research. The South Korean government has also revealed plans to invest heavily in 6G. It has targets to launch 6G networks by 2028. The European Union is also working to secure IPs in the 6G space, with Nokia and Ericsson, two telecoms giants, leading the development of 6G technology. The European hexa-X initiative, a collaboration between industry and academia, aims to create the foundations of future 6G technologies. In Japan, NTT DoCoMo and Sony are leading similar units for 6G. Finally, India has also initiated major 6G research projects with companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel working with global partnerships.
In August, Australia’s high commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell, said the two countries should work together on an ethical framework for 6G. Similar partnerships are also likely to be established with other friendly countries. The preparation has already been underway for some years. In November 2021, the Department of Telecommunications announced the formation of a 22-member task force that focuses solely on domestic 6G technology development.
The race for 6G is particularly intense due to the potential it holds. Everything will likely be a million times faster with 6G. This will lead to a speed of things that goes far beyond what 5G has been able to offer. Since artificial intelligence already accelerates solutions, 6G is likely to reduce processing time to a few milliseconds.
