GST Fraud Case: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday carried out raids in several cities of Gujarat in a money laundering case related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) “fraud” in which the state police recently arrested eight people, including a journalist. After registering a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the federal agency raided around 23 premises in the cities of Rajkot, Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Veraval, sources said. Mahesh Langa, the journalist arrested in the case, works at a leading newspaper whose premises are also being raided.
This money laundering case is related to the FIR of the Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police.
The Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police arrested several persons and entities after receiving a complaint from the Central GST regarding an alleged scam involving shell companies set up with the intention of defrauding the government through ‘Input Tax Credit’ (ITC). ) fake and fraudulent transactions. FIR was registered against him.
Langa was arrested along with seven others after the Central GST found some suspicious transactions in shell companies formed in the name of his wife and father using forged documents.
After the FIR was registered, the Gujarat Crime Branch and Economic Crime Branch carried out raids at 14 places across the state including Ahmedabad, Junagadh, Surat, Kheda and Bhavnagar.
According to the crime branch, more than 200 fake companies across the country were causing losses to the public exchequer through fake ‘tax credits’ in an organized manner and forged documents and identity cards were used to form these companies.
