UP govt introduces face attendance system to prevent fraudulent scholarship applications

The Department of Backward Classes Welfare Uttar Pradesh has implemented facial assistance using a dedicated application for students taking group one courses. The move is reportedly aimed at ensuring greater accountability and preventing fraudulent claims. Students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75% to be eligible for scholarships.

The department implemented the biometric attendance system for Group One courses to ensure transparency. The universities had to install the machines on their own for the process.

However, managers protested against the additional burden, after which government officials changed the biometric attendance system.

Students now have to mark their attendance through the app, replacing the biometric system. The app uses GPS location to record attendance within the university premises.

There are 50 universities in Kanpur offering courses like MBBS, BMS, BTech, MTech and BPharm. Despite the imperative to comply with the system immediately, 95% of these universities have not yet implemented it.

The Backward Classes Welfare Department will consider 75% attendance based on the prescribed working days for completing the course for scholarship eligibility.

Universities offering these courses must adopt this system.

Meanwhile, non-compliance will deprive students of scholarships and the university management will be responsible for the same.

District Backward Classes Welfare Officer Birpal said the scholarship application process is ongoing, with the deadline being November 20. Instead of biometrics, students will now be able to mark their attendance using a facial attendance request.

The scholarship scheme is a government initiative to provide financial assistance to students from low-income families. The program offers scholarships for various levels of education, including school, university and professional courses.
