MG ES5 arrives as a replacement for the ZS EV in China

MG has unveiled a new electric SUV for the Chinese market, the ES5, which is expected to replace the ZS EV. The new electric SUV has a stylish look. Its aesthetics are simple and uncontroversial, very similar to that of the current generation ZS EV. The overall design looks sleek and modern. The MS5 shares a platform with the MG4 hatchback and measures 4,476mm in length, making it 162mm longer than the ZS EV.

The MG ES5 features a modern interior. It has a digital instrument cluster and a giant central touchscreen. The cabin color scheme remains black, with silver trim adding some contrast. MG did not have an electric variant when it introduced the new generation ZS EV earlier this year. Only gasoline and a hybrid transmission were offered. The new ES5 is an all-electric model and replaces the ZS EV. It uses a single rear-mounted electric motor. It produces 168 HP and 250 Nm of maximum torque. The power will go to the rear wheels. MG offers the new ES5 with multiple battery packs in China. The largest has 62.2 kWh and promises a range of 525 km.

It is not clear when MG will update the ZS EV in India. The compact electric SUV is sold at a base price of Rs 18.98 lakh (ex-showroom). It has a single electric motor that produces 173 HP and 280 Nm of maximum torque. A 50.5 kWh battery offers a range of 461k on a single charge.
