Cashmere: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday concluded the ‘Kashmir Marathon’. This is the first international athletic event organized in the valley.
Around 2,000 athletes from India and abroad participated in the ‘Kashmir Marathon’. At the same time, Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty was also present along with Abdullah at his inauguration ceremony.
The ‘Kashmir Marathon’ saw the participation of India’s best long-distance runners, Asian gold medalists and some of the best runners from Europe and Africa.
The ‘Kashmir Marathon’ has two categories of races, including a full marathon of 42 kilometers and a half marathon of 21 kilometers.
The tourism department has organized this event which aims to show the world that the situation in Kashmir has improved.
Tourism Department director Raja Yakub said on Saturday: “Kashmir is open for everyone. We welcome tourists from different parts of the world. “If someone runs 42 kilometres, it is itself an indication that the situation in Kashmir is now peaceful.”
“We also want to show the world our heritage, special products, crafts and gastronomy,” he said. “Hundreds of people are connected to these runners on social media, so in a way they will be our ‘brand ambassadors.'”
