Delhi Pollution: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday said that the main reason for pollution in Anand Vihar area is buses coming from other states. The Chief Minister said the Delhi government will work with the neighboring state to implement anti-pollution measures at Uttar Pradesh government bus stations located near the national capital. Atishi made these remarks after inspecting pollution control measures at Anand Vihar bus station along with Environment Minister Gopal Rai.
Addressing the pollution issue, the Chief Minister said, “Anand Vihar, situated on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, remains the epicenter of pollution, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) level is the highest. high. This area is frequented by buses coming from outside Delhi and there is a nearby Kaushambi bus station. Electric and CNG buses ply in Delhi, while Kaushambi bus station serves diesel buses. Uttar Pradesh government to implement pollution control measures there too.”
He said construction works carried out by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) have also increased pollution levels in the area. Atishi said the Delhi government is using all available resources, including 99 teams and over 315 ‘smog guns’ to address the problem. “Smoke guns are continuously used in the area and the roads are kept wet to control dust,” he said. “All roads have been repaired and congestion points have been cleared to facilitate traffic flow.”
‘Smog guns’ spray small droplets of water into the atmosphere to reduce air pollution associated with dust and other particles. Atishi also spoke on the issue of pollution in Yamuna and accused the Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments of dumping untreated effluents into the river. He said, “During the Chhath festival, they close the Agra canal, so their untreated waste flows towards Delhi. Still we want a solution. That’s why we use food-based ‘silicone defoamers’ and Delhi Jal Board is running a ‘defoamer’ campaign to address this issue. We will continue to work for a clean Yamuna even if others try to disrupt our efforts.”
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said there are many fluctuations in air quality during the night and early morning hours, this is due to the arrival and departure of buses. He said, “The air quality index is particularly bad these days and the main reason is the bus station located at Anand Vihar in Delhi and secondly the bus station at Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh. Buses in Delhi now run on CNG and electricity, but a large number of diesel buses from Uttar Pradesh still reach these depots. The smoke coming out of these buses is affecting air quality.” Rai urged the Uttar Pradesh government to adopt similar pollution control measures, saying a coordinated approach is needed for positive results.
