Musk’s US PAC is playing an important role in helping to mobilize and register voters in battleground states that could decide the election, but there are signs it is having trouble meeting its goals, Reuters reported on Friday.
The lucky recipient of Saturday’s check was a man named John Dreher, event staff said.
“By the way, John had no idea. Anyway, you’re welcome,” Musk said as he handed the check to Dreher.
On Sunday, Musk presented a second $1 million check to a woman at an event in Pittsburgh, according to a post by America PAC on X.
Musk promises to donate $1 million every day to anyone who signs his online petition, which reads: “The First and Second Amendment guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I pledge my support for the First and Second Amendments.” Second Amendments.”
To be eligible for the $1 million, petition signers must be registered voters and live in one of seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to America’s website PAC.
The petition also offers $100 to each registered Pennsylvania voter who signs and $100 for recommending a registered Pennsylvania voter to sign.
The legality of the gifts is sure to come under scrutiny in the coming days.
It is a federal crime to pay people with the intent to induce or reward them to vote or register, a crime punishable by imprisonment. The ban covers not only monetary expenditures, but also anything of monetary value such as alcoholic beverages or lottery bets, according to a Department of Justice election crimes manual.
The Harrisburg event was the third in as many days in Pennsylvania, where Musk is casting the November election in stark terms and encouraging his followers to vote early and get others to do the same.
Attendees at Saturday’s event had to sign the petition, which allows America PAC to obtain contact information for more potential voters it can work with to get to the polls for Trump.
Musk, ranked by Forbes as the world’s richest person, has so far contributed at least $75 million to America PAC, according to federal disclosures, making the group a crucial part of Trump’s bid to win back the White House.
The businessman has increasingly supported Republican causes and this year became an open supporter of Trump.
Trump, in turn, has said that, if elected, he would appoint Musk to head a government efficiency commission.
