Orchha nears World Heritage status as UNESCO accepts India dossier
India’s cultural heritage received a boost as Madhya Pradesh File of the Tourist Board of OrchaTürkiye’s historical monuments have been accepted by the central government for nomination as UNESCO World Heritage in 2027-28. Indian Ambassador to UNESCO Vishal V. Sharma formally presented the file to UNESCO World Heritage Center Director Lazare Eloundou Assomo. Once declared by UNESCO, Orchha will be the only state-protected World Heritage site in India.
The path to this recognition has been a five-year effort. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board initiated proposals to include Orchha and Bhedaghat in the Tentative List of UNESCO in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Following a thorough evaluation process, the Archaeological Survey of India forwarded these proposals to UNESCO, resulting in the preparation of detailed dossiers in collaboration with expert organisations. Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture Sheo Shekhar Shukla emphasized the state’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Orchha and improving tourism facilities. Orchha is famous for its Bundela architecture, exemplified by majestic palaces, temples and forts. Jahangir Mahal, Raja Ram Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple and Orcha Fort The complex are some of the notable landmarks. The city’s location on the banks of the Betwa River adds to its natural beauty and spiritual significance.
Every year, the Central Government recommends UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to nominate a country’s heritage site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. MP At present, Khajuraho temple complex, Sanchi stupas and Bhimbetka rock shelters are nominated in the World Heritage List, 14 sites of the state are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the group of Khajuraho temples, Bhimbetka caves and Sanchi Stupa are included in the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which includes Gwalior Fort. , Khuni Bhandara of Burhanpur, Rock Art Sites of Chambal Valley, Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple of Bhojpur, Gond Monuments of Ramnagar at Mandla, Dhamnar Historical Group, Mandu Monument Group, Orchha Historical Group, Narmada. The valley includes Bhedaghat-Lameta. Ghat, Satpura and Chanderi Tiger Reserve.
