Top Israeli army commander dies in Gaza explosion

New Delhi: Colonel Ahsan Daksa, a senior Israeli army officer and commander of the 401st Brigade, was killed during an operation against Hamas militants in northern Gaza. The incident occurred in the Jabalia area, where an explosive device detonated while Daksa and other officers were inspecting the surroundings. Additionally, Colonel Daksa, another battalion commander and two officers were injured in the explosion.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military announced Sunday that it will now target Hezbollah’s financial arm, based in Lebanon, and plans to attack a “large number of targets” in the coming hours in Beirut and elsewhere.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said they will issue evacuation warnings for people in parts of Beirut, and that “anyone near sites used to finance Hezbollah’s terrorist activity should stay away from them immediately.” The strikes will target al-Qard al-Hassan “throughout Lebanon,” a senior Israeli intelligence official said. Al-Qard al-Hassan is a Hezbollah unit used to pay agents of the Iran-backed militant group and help purchase weapons. The official added, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with army regulations.

The registered non-profit organization, sanctioned by both the United States and Saudi Arabia, provides financial services and is also used by ordinary Lebanese.

The extent of the new Israeli evacuation warnings was not immediately clear.

A year of rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah over the war in Gaza escalated into an all-out war last month, and Israel sent ground troops to Lebanon earlier this month.

Israel’s announcement came a day after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called civilian casualties in Lebanon “too high” in the war between Israel and Hezbollah, and urged Israel to scale back some attacks, especially in Beirut and its surroundings.
