Viral Video: High autorickshaw fares are a common concern for many travelers in India. To address this issue, the Mumbai Traffic Police on Wednesday released a video guide aimed at helping commuters spot tampered autorickshaw meters and avoid potential overcharging.
On X (formerly Twitter), the police department shared tips for identifying faulty meters, with the goal of empowering travelers and ensuring fair rates. In the clip, a police officer shows a key indicator of a rigged meter: an additional flashing dot after the last digit of the meter. The policeman explains that if the flashing light remains visible or continues to flash after turning off the meter button, it clearly means that the meter has been tampered with and is probably overcharging passengers. “Wondering how your autorickshaw bill travels faster than light? It’s no rocket science – here’s a simple guide to help you identify whether your Auto Rickshaw meter is faulty or not. Be alert, identify and lodge complaints about faulty meters,” the Mumbai Traffic Police said. he wrote while sharing the clip.

In the viral tweet, the police department shared information to report faulty meters. Passengers can contact the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO) helpline numbers: RTO Mumbai Central: 9076201010 or via email at [email protected] RTO Mumbai West: 9920240202 or mh02.autotaxicomplaint@gmail. com.
The police also informed that all legal action had been initiated against the autorickshaw drivers involved in the meter tampering. The measures include the First Information Act registered against drivers. In addition, the authorities have seized a vehicle in question (auto rickshaw), preventing its further use until the investigation is completed. Additionally, the driver’s operating permit was cancelled, effectively revoking his license to operate as an autorickshaw driver. Meanwhile, the awareness video has gained traction online, racking up more than 388,000 views. Reacting to the video, a user suggested, “Remove the meter concept and get the mobile app. Let the drivers click OK for the ride to start. Stop to close the ride. Most of them use mobile phones for Ola or Uber. There are no more manipulations.” “.
“They kept saying electronic meters can’t be tampered with. I always called them. This has been going on for over 5 years,” another commented. “There is gross negligence on the part of DCP Traffic in looking into various complaints related to cars and traffic everywhere,” said a third user.
