Here’s why Apple couldn’t beat Huawei in smartphone sales in China in the third quarter

Apple ‘s iPhone Sales in China fell 0.3 percent, while rival Huawei posted a 42 percent increase in the third quarter of 2024, as competition intensifies in the world’s largest smartphone market.

Apple Huawei took second place with a market share of 15.6 percent, albeit with a year-on-year drop of 0.5 percentage points, while Huawei took third place with 15.3 percent, gaining 4.2 percentage points. , according to data from research firm IDC on Friday.

Vivo, which mainly sells budget phones, was the top vendor with a market share of 18.6 percent.

The contrasting performances follow Huawei’s return last year to the premium segment with its Mate 60 series, which features what analysts said is a domestically produced chip.

The Chinese technology giant, even more challenged Apple position with its latest Pura 70 model launched earlier this year.

Apple has faced additional obstacles in China, including restrictions on iPhone use by some government agencies.

Since then, the American technology giant has responded with multiple discount campaigns to boost sales.

Third quarter performance was helped in part by the new iPhone 16, which went on sale on September 20. On the same day, Huawei launched a competing product: a triple-folding phone.

The new iPhones are off to a strong start in China, with sales 20 percent higher in the first three weeks since their launch compared to the 2023 models, according to separate data from researcher Counterpoint.

“With its annual launch of new products, Apple returned to China’s top five market positions with a market share of 15.6 percent,” IDC said.

“With subsequent increases in market promotions and the launch of Apple Vision Pro, market demand iPhone Series 16 is expected to materialize gradually in the future.”

Overall, smartphone sales in China during the third quarter rose 3.2 percent to 68.78 million units.
