Indian envoy Sanjay Kumar Verma recently issued a warning message to Indian students studying in Canada, urging them to be vigilant and avoid radicalization attempts by Khalistani extremists. In an interview with NDTV, Verma urged students and their parents, highlighting the importance of family counseling to help young Indians stay away from risky decisions.
“Currently, Khalistani terrorists and extremists pose a threat to the broader Indian community in Canada, including the approximately 319,000 students residing there,” Verma said, while highlighting the need for greater awareness among students about their environment.
He further explained how the economic conditions in Canada, especially the limited job opportunities the country offers, make students fall into the trap of Khalistani influence. “These extremists, in exchange for money and food, lure students into their nefarious plans. They encourage them to organize anti-India protests or engage in activities that include insulting the Indian flag,” the Indian envoy said.
“Then they are advised to apply for asylum and make claims that if he returns to India, he will face punishment,” Verma added. He recalled that similar cases in the past have led some students to receive asylum under fabricated requests.
Additionally, Verma called on parents in India to communicate regularly with their children, especially to help students understand the potential risks they could face if associated with such activities. “There are multiple negative influences on students in Canada that push them in the wrong direction,” he warned, urging families to stay connected and provide support.
It is pertinent to note that the High Commissioner’s comments come as diplomatic relations between India and Canada hit a new low, fueled by repeated and unverified claims by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau has alleged that Delhi-linked agents, in cooperation with criminal gangs such as Lawrence Bishnoi, are targeting South Asians inside Canada, a claim India has firmly denied.
