Georgia’s main opposition party, the United National Movement, launched United Space, an identity app powered by Rarimo ahead of the October 26 parliamentary elections.
According to a report on Alexa BlockchainThe app aims to use the blockchain-powered system to combat low voter turnout in Georgia by rewarding citizens for their participation, regardless of their political stances. If elected, the party wants to use the app to “digitize” the Public Service Room as a platform to experiment with Universal Basic Income, with profits returned to citizens.
Powered by a zero-knowledge social protocol UndergroundThe United Space app wants to implement a liquid democracy model that allows citizens to vote anonymously through the app and be rewarded for their participation.
United Space is actually a modified version of an existing citizenship proofing solution from Rarimo ZK called Freedom Tool. What sets Freedom Tool apart from other blockchain systems is its ability to allow users to issue their own identity by uploading their national identification data, encrypted, in a chain record.
The application offers a voting system that is free of concerns about privacy violations and possible voter manipulation because the blockchain acts as a protection against poll manipulation.
The system prevents external parties, including the government, from tracking users’ activities on the app. This level of anonymity is crucial given Georgia’s current political climate.
Tensions have been rising regarding this year’s elections, considering that Georgia’s democracy has been retreating toward authoritarianism and returning to Russia’s sphere of influence.
When it comes to solving low voter turnout in Georgia, citizens can earn rewards not only for casting their vote but also for other forms of civic participation. On the United Space website it offers a program called “Points and Ownership” where citizens can accumulate points and become shareholders of strategic points.
The deputy and leader of the United National Movement, Giorgi Vashadze, foresees a broad transformation of the democratic system. Not only for Georgia, but also for the rest of the world.
“United Space will help make Georgia one of the strongest democracies in the world. It will provide unprecedented privacy, access and ease of use to citizens as they interact with both the electoral system and everyday state services,” Vashadze said.
Rarilabs Director Kitty Horlick said the app makes citizens reach out to stakeholders, helping them engage in the democratic process, state assets and public services.
