New Delhi: After spending almost three weeks in detention in Uganda, billionaire Pankaj Oswal’s daughter is out on bail. However, he still remains in Uganda.
Vasundhara’s family spoke exclusively to Zee media describing the time the former had to spend in Ugandan jail. Vasundhara’s mother Radhika Oswal and sister Ridi Oswal told Zee Media that Vasundhara was released on bail on October 21 after three traumatic weeks, but the saga is far from over.
Excerpts…
1. After her initial refusal of bail, Vasundhara is now out on bail. What is the reaction of the Oswal family?
Although the alleged victim has testified that she has not suffered any crime, it is shocking that her charges have not yet been completely dropped. It is absurd that the threat of further jail time or even a trial looms over Vasundhara while the alleged victim has clearly accepted that no crime occurred. This situation appears to be a devious scheme driven by ulterior motives, influenced by business competitors and their connections to corrupt officials.
2. Was the family able to talk to Vasundhara during her stay in jail?
Now that Vasundhara is out on bail, we talk every day. But during his stay in prison, he could only contact us twice a week. She shared that she literally had to beg officers to give her a phone and that they made her wait an hour just to talk to us for ten minutes, twice a week. It was an incredibly traumatic experience for all of us to be completely isolated from her and unable to help her while she was in an African prison without any crime.
3. What is the current situation of Vasundhara?
Vasundhara has been through an extremely traumatic experience and right now our priority is to give her the space and support she needs to process everything. Her focus remains on clearing up these absurd and completely false allegations and, as a family, we support her through this difficult time.
Vasundhara was arrested at the Oswal Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) plant in Uganda. The 26-year-old was arrested on October 1, allegedly in the case of a missing man.
The family had filed an appeal with the UN over the daughter’s “illegal detention”, claiming that Vasundhara’s arrest/detention was due to “false allegations” by the former conglomerate employee regarding the murder and kidnapping of Mukesh Menaria.
Menaria had worked on her family’s private jet and as a maid at their residences around the world. The Oswal family has claimed that the charges against their daughter Vasundhara are false, adding that the embittered former employee has since admitted the fact. Oswals said Mukesh was found alive and was in Tanzania.
Meanwhile, according to a report by Wion newspaper, Uganda police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said that “all suspicions are based on his (Menaria’s) employers, who could have detained him. He could be in their custody.”
Wion reports added that as investigations continue, Menaria has been taken to Uganda.
