A little bit of Gujarat, a little bit of the Bronx

We don’t blame you if you can’t picture Falguni Pathak singing rap verses. But that’s the beauty of creativity – it doesn’t limit you. After decades of making her fans dance to her songs during Navratri, the dandiya queen Road to the mountain has tried his hand at rap with Rangaara. The song, which blends Gujarati folk music with contemporary rap, marks his collaboration with Aditya Gadhvi, who rose to fame with his Coke Studio hit Bharat Khalasi, and composer Achint Thakkar.

Pathak, known for her traditional garba and folk songs, says the transition to rap was both exciting and challenging. “This song has been a challenge for me as I usually sing folk songs. Rangaara has a projection of words; it has a melody, harmony and rhythm. This is the first time in my life that I am singing rap,” she marvels.

She credits Gadhvi and Thakkar for bringing a fresh approach to Gujarati music. For her, Rangaara is more than a celebration of Gujarat’s cultural heritage. “It combines traditional elements with modern musical trends. This fusion is aimed at appealing to a wider audience, making Gujarati music more accessible. I wasn’t sure if my fans would like it as I was trying something new.” [far removed] “Gujarati music is very different from the garba music I do, but the response is phenomenal.” Pathak is happy to see Gujarati music going beyond folk songs. “Gujarati music is evolving. Rangaara and Khalasi have started a different trend in Gujarati music. They are keeping the authenticity alive and making it modern.”
