Hajek was talking to his fiancée while returning home when he saw a vehicle hit a cow and speed away. He tried to take a picture of the vehicle but couldn’t, so he took a picture of the vehicle. wounded cow and sent it to his fiancée.
Soon after, a group of ‘gau rakshaks’ confronted him near his residence and beat him with sticks accusing him of being involved in cow trade.
Hajek’s relatives rushed to the scene after hearing his voice and calmed the situation.
Police said the attackers mistakenly thought Hajek was a cow smuggler. “It appears the attack occurred when Hajek took a photograph of the injured cow, which made the crowd mistakenly think he was involved in cattle trafficking,” police inspector Sheetalkumar Ballal said, according to India Today.
The police have filed a complaint against eight people.
