Hajek’s relatives rushed to the scene after hearing his voice and calmed the situation.

Police said the attackers mistakenly thought Hajek was a cow smuggler. “It appears the attack occurred when Hajek took a photograph of the injured cow, which made the crowd mistakenly think he was involved in cattle trafficking,” police inspector Sheetalkumar Ballal said, according to India Today.

The police have filed a complaint against eight people.

Four of the accused were arrested and produced in court on Friday.
