Tezpur: A man was shot dead in Tezpur after he allegedly tried to molest two girls who were out for an evening walk.
This incident occurs days after the gang rape of a minor in AssamThe main accused died after drowning in a pond while trying to recreate the crime scene while in police custody.
A man was shot for trying to abuse two girls
An accused, arrested along with another person for allegedly attempting to sexually abuse two girls, was shot and injured while trying to escape from police custody on Saturday in AssamPolice said the shooting took place in Sonitpur district.
The duo had allegedly tried to molest the two girls who were out for a night stroll here on Friday and when they raised an alarm, local people rushed to the spot.
The accused tried to flee from the spot but people chased them and caught them, Sonitpur Additional Superintendent of Police Madhurima Das told reporters here.
They were later handed over to the police at Mahabhairab police station, he said.
The youth, while being taken to the scene of the incident for investigation, attacked the police, snatched a pistol from one of the police officers and opened fire, the official said.
The police responded by shooting and the accused was wounded in one of his legs.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital and his condition is said to be stable, Das said.
A complaint was filed and local residents organized a protest.
The two girls lodged a complaint and the police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), he added.
A group of residents surrounded the police station to protest the incident.
Assam Gang rape case

A 14-year-old girl was returning from a coaching class when she was surrounded by a motorcycle with three people on it; she was riding her bike in Dhing on Thursday night.
The main accused, Taffajul Ali, who allegedly escaped from police custody, jumped into a pond and died on Saturday morning in Dhing in AssamIn Nagaon district, an official said.
According to police, the accused, who was arrested on Friday, was taken to the scene where the crime allegedly took place to recreate the scene at around 3.30am.
