Actor and BJP minister Suresh Gopi reacts to Hema Committee report

Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Tuesday lashed out at the media, accusing them of misleading the public’s perception of the film industry regarding the recent sexual harassment allegations against actors and directors.

The actor-politician called the allegations “fodder” for the media and said they were welcome to make money out of it. However, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism said they should not try to destroy an industry as big as cinema. He was responding to questions from reporters on the recent allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against several directors and actors, including CPI(M) MP M Mukesh.

“This is all food for you, that’s what I understand. You can use it to make money. There’s no problem with that. But these questions are in the hands of the court, and it has the intelligence and logic to come to a decision on this.”

“You (media) are not only making people fight among themselves for your own benefits, but you are also misleading the public. Complaints are coming in the form of accusations at this point. What are you telling people? Are you the court? You are not. The court will decide. Let the court decide,” Gopi said.

His response came a day after the Yuva Morcha organised a march to Mukesh’s residence in Kollam.

17 AMMA members, including Mohanlal, resign:

A week after the Hema Committee report was made public, superstar Mohanlal resigned as the president of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Not only him, but all the office bearers have tendered their resignation. Hema Committee Report A report submitted to the government in 2019 reveals shocking details of women’s working conditions in the Malayalam film industry. After the report was published, several women artists came forward and began narrating harrowing experiences in the patriarchal industry. The resignations come amid a barrage of sexual harassment and assault allegations against many people in the Malayalam film industry, including three AMMA executive committee members — former general secretary Siddique, vice-president Jeyan R and joint secretary Baburaj.

What is the Hema Committee and why was it formed?

The committee was created in 2018 to investigate allegations of sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industryfollowing the sexual assault case of a prominent actress in October 2017. The idea behind setting up the committee was to examine multiple allegations of sexual harassment and recommend action against such irregularities. The committee, chaired by retired judge K. Hema, included a diverse panel of industry professionals.
