Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he does not believe in “capital punishment” and that the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru served no purpose.

He said evidence has shown time and again that “it may not be in India, but in other countries, where people have been executed and found to be wrong.”
Afzal Guru, one of the main plotters of the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament, was hanged in 2013 in Tihar Jail. He was convicted of conspiracy in the Attack on Parliament in December 2001 in which six people died security personnel and a civilian.
He He was on death row for nine years while the government dithered. The fact that Guru has not made a final decision on his clemency plea was due in part to legal efforts by Guru’s family to obtain relief and also to the government’s unwillingness to carry out the execution.
