AG Noorani, renowned academic, prolific writer and distinguished legal expert, passed away at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 94. The news of his death has triggered an outpouring of tributes across the country, reflecting his significant contributions to law, literature and constitutional discourse.
A career full of history in law and literature
Born Abdul Ghafoor Majeed Noorani on 16 September 1930 in Bombay, Noorani’s legal career was marked by an illustrious practice in both the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. He was a highly respected authority on constitutional matters and the author of several influential books, includingThe Kashmir dispute, 1947-2012,Article 370: Constitutional History of Jammu and KashmirandThe destruction of HyderabadNoorani also wrote biographies of prominent figures such as former President Dr Zakir Husain and Badruddin Tyabji, the first Indian lawyer of the Mumbai High Court during British rule.
Defender of Rights and Attorney General
Noorani was known for his advocacy on several important political and legal issues. He defended National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah during his prolonged detention and appeared before the Bombay High Court on behalf of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi against his political rival J Jayalalitha. His contributions extended to writing extensively on issues affecting Indian Muslims and presenting numerous papers at seminars across the country.

The demise of Attorney General Noorani has elicited heartfelt tributes from various quarters. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah expressed his condolences and said, “I am sorry to hear of the demise of Attorney General Noorani Sb this morning. Noorani Sb was a man of letters, an accomplished lawyer, a scholar and a political commentator. He wrote extensively on legal issues and on issues like Kashmir, RSS and the constitution. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat.”
Hurriyat Conference President Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also paid tribute and said, “Kashmir loses a true advocate and scholar.”
Asaduddin OwaisiAll India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Member of Parliament said, “General Noorani, a giant among scholars, has passed away. I learnt a lot from him, from the Constitution to Kashmir to China and even the art of appreciating good food. May Allah grant him maghfirah.”
