‘AI altered my image’: Former Google designer Elizabeth Lazarki surprised by conference photo editing

Elizabeth Lazarki, a prominent UI/UX designer with experience in Google Maps, Facebook, and YouTube, recently expressed surprise after discovering that her conference poster photo had been altered to include a bra. Lazarki will be attending a conference focused on UX and AI design later this year.

Seeing the promotional material, she was surprised and said, “I just saw an ad for the conference with my photo and I thought, wait, that doesn’t look good. Is my bra showing in my profile photo? Did you never notice?” …? That’s weird.” After reviewing her original photo, she confirmed, “No bra showing.” She further detailed her reaction: “I put the two photos next to each other and I was like WTF.”

The reason for generating a fake bra generated by AI

Lazarki explained that the alteration was not a simple oversight. The conference presenter informed him that the person managing his social media used artificial intelligence technology to lengthen the photo, causing unwanted editing. “AI invented the bottom part of the image (where it believed women’s shirts should be more unbuttoned, with some tension around the buttons and revealing a small hint of something underneath),” he said.

The incident sparked a wave of reactions online, with her post garnering more than 2 million views. Many users were amazed by the AI’s ability to alter the clothing in a woman’s photo. One user commented: “A fascinating story. I’ve given Midjourney identical directions, just swapping “men” and “women” and the results are always drastically different, sexualizing the images of women almost every time. “Interesting mirror of our culture.”

Another user joked: “Is the conference about AI and UX? I bet you’ll have a great chat with this first-hand experience about the ways AI can mess up.”

A third said: “Interesting, I used Adobe AI to adjust the logos and decided that a slightly light skinned man is supposed to be a woman and added all the female features. “It wasn’t fun at all.”
