Airtel, Nokia and MediaTek complete trials combining the use of TDD and FDD bands for Uplink on next-generation chipsets

Airtel, MediaTek and Nokia have announced the successful completion of trials that efficiently combine TDD and FDD mid-band spectrum in a given time using the latest generation chipset. The trial, which aimed to maximise uplink throughput, was conducted at Airtel’s technology lab and achieved uplink speeds of 300Mbps, setting a new benchmark in 5G network performance.

The trial improved UL speeds by adding 3.5Ghz (n78) and 2.1Ghz (n1) frequency bands, a groundbreaking innovation that significantly improves uplink performance for demanding use cases by dynamically switching uplink transmission between two carriers in the TDD and FDD spectrum more efficiently.

Innovative UL Tx switching promises faster connectivity, improved user experience, and greater network efficiency, addressing high-demand use cases such as video conferencing, live streaming, and large file uploads.

Commenting on this, Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer, Bharti Airtel, said, “At Airtel, continuous innovation remains the foundation of all our product and service offerings. This trial is not only a testament to our philosophy of enhancing our next-generation network infrastructure and delivering an unmatched 5G user experience, but will also greatly improve the uplink performance of our network, resulting in faster data speeds and better connectivity.”

“We are delighted to collaborate with Bharti Airtel and Nokia on this first-of-its-kind trial in India, where our Dimensity 5G mobile platform played a crucial role in achieving the highest uplink speeds on Airtel’s 5G network. This partnership underlines our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology that enhances the connectivity experience for users,” said Dr. Ho-Chi Hwang, General Manager, Wireless Communication Systems and Partnerships, MediaTek.

Tarun Chhabra, Country Director and Head of Nokia’s Mobile Networks Division in India, said, “We are proud to partner with our long-standing partner Airtel on this ground-breaking project. Uplink transmission switching will pave the way for superior 5G networks, enabling seamless data transfer on mobile devices and driving demand for data-intensive applications like XR. We congratulate Bharti Airtel for achieving this milestone and pushing the boundaries of connectivity into new realms.”

For this advanced trial, Airtel used equipment from Nokia’s next-generation AirScale 5G radio portfolio, while MediaTek provided its Dimensity 5G mobile platform as user equipment.
