Samajwadi Party chief and former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday expressed support for the Bharat Bandh called by some groups for communal reservation, saying that “public movements” put a stop to the “unbridled government”. The former UP chief minister took to social media platform X to share his views on the issue. He said, “The mass movement to protect reservation is a positive endeavour. It will inculcate a new consciousness among the exploited and underprivileged and prove to be a shield of people power against any kind of manipulation of reservation. Peaceful movement is a democratic right,” he posted in Hindi.

Akhilesh Yadav further added, “Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar had already warned that the Constitution will only work if the intentions of those who implement it are right. When governments in power tamper with the Constitution and the rights it grants through fraud, scams and scandals, then the public will have to come out on the streets. Public movements put a stop to unbridled rule.”

It is noteworthy that twenty-one organisations from across the country have called for a Bharat Bandh against the seven-judge constitutional bench order of the Supreme Court allowing sub-categorisation in SC and ST categories. The apex court order paved the way for the introduction of creamy layers in SC and ST quotas similar to those found in the OBC category. The organisations opposed this decision and said it would harm the basic principles of reservation.
