The National Medical Commission (NMC) has started the process of registering all MBBS doctors eligible to practice in India on a recently launched portal, as part of which all medical professionals will have a unique ID.
The National Medical Registry (NMR) is a dynamic database and will be a central repository of all registered doctors, where their authenticity is verified through Aadhaar IDs.
“The NMR is ready for registration of Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP) with immediate effect,” said Dr B Srinivas, Secretary, NMC.
All MBBS doctors who are registered with the Indian Medical Registry (IMR) have to re-register with the NMR, the NMC said in a public notice recently, adding that all medical colleges/institutions and state medical councils (SMCs) are interconnected on the portal.
Some data will be visible to the public and some will only be visible to the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of NMC, SMC, National Examination Board (NBE) and medical institutions and RMPs as per requirements, the notice said.
To start the registration process, doctors will need their Aadhaar ID, a digital copy of their MBBS degree certificate and the registration certificate from the State Medical Council/Medical Council of India where the doctor first registered.
Additional details such as registration credentials and qualification can be entered manually and submitted through the portal.
The application is then automatically sent to the relevant SMC for verification. The SMC then sends the application to the relevant school or college for further review. Once verification is successful, the application is sent to the NMC.
Following verification by the NMC, a unique NMR ID will be issued. During this process, doctors can opt to join the Healthcare Provider Registry, which will link them to the broader digital healthcare ecosystem, the notice said.
Through this portal, all stakeholders including SMCs and educational institutions can log in and verify applications from a single platform.
The NMR portal offers a variety of features, including the ability to add additional qualifications, track applications, suspend licenses and issue NMR ID cards and digital medical certificates, it said.
Currently, registration using the MBBS degree is only available on the portal and additional qualifications may be added soon, the NMC said.
“Till date, there was no comprehensive data that could give a detailed and holistic picture of aspects such as the total number of doctors in the country, those who have left the country, those who have lost their licence to practise or the number and details of doctors who have lost their lives. The launch of NMR will ensure data provision of its over 130,000 doctors,” an official had said earlier.
The National Medical Record (NMR) Portal was inaugurated by Union Health Minister JP Nadda on August 23.
“The National Health Registry is a much-awaited step in this direction that will strengthen the digital healthcare ecosystem and ensure quality healthcare to the people of India,” Nadda said.
Section 31 of the NMC Act 2019 requires the NMC’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) to maintain a national register in electronic format containing the name, address and all recognised qualifications held by an authorised medical practitioner.
