Amazon blames Alexa’s glitch for backing Kamala Harris over Donald Trump

Amazon Alexa’s political bias: Tech companies and their products, including their virtual assistants, often refrain from expressing their opinion on any political event. AI chatbots are designed to remain neutral, so they refrain from answering any queries that might force them to take sides. Breaking from this trend, Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa recently endorsed US Democratic candidate Kamala Harris over Republican candidate Donald Trump, when asked which candidate to vote for.

Numerous videos circulating on social media show Alexa refusing to answer questions about the reasons for voting for Donald Trump. When asked “Alexa, why should I vote for Donald Trump?”, Alexa responds: “I can’t offer content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate.”

On the other hand, when asked about the reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, Alexa responds by saying: “While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most important may be that she is a strong candidate with a proven track record of accomplishment. As the first female vice president, Harris has already broken an important gender barrier, and her career in politics has been characterized by a commitment to progressive ideals and a focus on helping marginalized communities.”

In another video, Alexa answers a question about why she voted for Kamala Harris by saying, “Because you believe in her policies. Because you trust her experience and her leadership skills. Because you want to move forward as a nation and make progress on the things you care about, like health care, education, equality, and justice.”

What does Amazon say about Alexa’s political bias?

Amazon has cited a “bug” over Alexa’s political bias. The bug has now been fixed, and engineers have stopped Alexa from responding to queries about why she supports one candidate over another.

An Amazon spokesperson told US media that Alexa has no political beliefs and that the company was making “ongoing changes to improve the systems it has in place to detect and block content that violates its policies.”
