The dream of making it big in Sweden, a top destination for Indians and the fifth-largest country in Europe, is becoming a struggle for many, partly due to the high cost of living. Rising emigration figures suggest that newcomers are increasingly being forced to reconsider their choice of Sweden as their adopted home. One Indian man living in Sweden, Ankur Tyagi, has taken to social media to explain why he thinks Indians are returning to their home country. Tyagi, a software engineer and CEO of the Sweden-India Business Council, shared five key reasons:
1. Professional growthHe noted that India’s booming economy offers highly skilled professionals competitive salaries and exciting career opportunities, making returning to India attractive.
2. LonelinessTyagi noted that cultural and language barriers in Sweden make it difficult for many people to form close friendships. Indians often miss the strong social ties and community life they had in India, which can be difficult to replicate in Sweden.
3. Spouse’s Employment:Lack of Swedish language skills poses significant challenges for spouses when it comes to finding employment in Sweden, despite their qualifications and work experience.
4. Better opportunities:Although Sweden offers a high quality of life, some Indians find better financial opportunities in the United States, with higher salaries and lower taxes, which motivates them to move.
5. Cost of livingTyagi said the high cost of living in Sweden is a burden for many, while India offers a better lifestyle at a lower cost.
According to Statistics Sweden, this is the first time since at least 1998 that Sweden has experienced negative net migration of Indians in the first six months of the year. A total of 2,461 people born in India moved to Sweden between January and June this year. During the same period last year, 3,681 Indians migrated to Sweden. Excluding the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, Indian immigration to Sweden is now at its lowest level since 2017.
Prior to this, Indian immigration had been steadily increasing since 2009, driven by strengthening diplomatic relations and Sweden’s efforts to recruit more professionals for its technology sector.
