Ananya Panday on the need for systemic change

Asked about her views on the current climate where there have been many crimes against women as well as how they are treated in cinema, Ananya said that while awareness is crucial, it must be accompanied by concrete efforts to bring about real change in society.

“It has always been a dark time for women, now we are talking about it a lot more. It is one thing to talk about it, but the most important thing is to do something about it,” she told PTI, adding, “As women and as actresses, we are doing our part by educating the men around us on what they can do better in these situations and also raising our voice on issues that are important.”

Ananya, however, said that systemic change is needed, especially through legislation. “The most important step is to change the laws and for the government to make viable changes in this regard,” she added.

Niharika and Muskkaan on women’s safety in the film industry

Ananya will next be seen in Call Me Bae and her co-star on the Prime Video show, Niharika, said it is “wonderful” that women are speaking out about inequality in the film industry.

“Problems and disparity in the film industry have always existed. Now, people are talking about it, they are opposing it, they are raising their voices and that is wonderful because it leads to systemic change,” said the Paatal Lok actor.

He said there is now an internal complaints committee on the set and that cast and crew contracts include clauses against sexual harassment.

Muskkaan, who also stars in the series, said there are platforms to lodge complaints, an essential step in empowering women to speak out without fear.

“We also have guidance programs, such as strict rules on how to behave in a work environment. That is a big change. You can also file a complaint anonymously,” he said.

His comments come in the backdrop of the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor and the sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Thane, Maharashtra, as well as revelations in the Justice K Hema Committee report on numerous cases of sexual harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry.
