Another visit to Russia on the horizon? PM Modi confirms attendance at BRICS summit in October

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modiwho has just visited Ukraine after an official trip to Russia just over a month ago, is expected to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan. This would mark Prime Minister ModiThe second US visit to Russia in two months amid the ongoing conflict. Russia, which currently chairs BRICS, will host the summit in its southwestern city of Kazan from October 22-24.

This will be the group’s first summit since it was enlarged, when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined as new full members on January 1, bringing the bloc to 10 members. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are the group’s founding members.

During his conversation with the Russian president Vladimir PutinPrime Minister Modi confirmed his readiness to attend the Kazan summit. Following the much-talked-about visit of the prime minister to Ukraine, the two leaders spoke on the phone and agreed to continue bilateral communication at various levels. Russia and Ukraine are locked in a conflict that has lasted for more than two and a half years.

The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the BRICS cooperation and Prime Minister Modi “confirmed his readiness to participate in the integration summit in Kazan in October, held under the presidency of Russia.”

During his telephone conversation with President PutinPM Modi reiterated India’s strong commitment to supporting an early, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict with Ukraine. “We exchanged perspectives on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine. We reiterated India’s strong commitment to supporting an early, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” PM Modi posted on X.

Prime Minister Modi visits Ukraine and Russia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent nearly nine hours in kyiv on Friday, the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since the country became independent more than three decades ago. India and Ukraine signed four agreements and decided to enhance their cooperation in a number of key areas, including defence, trade, pharmaceuticals, green energy and education.

Just a month ago, Prime Minister Modi was in Moscow to attend the 22nd India-Russia Summit. This was Prime Minister Modi’s first trip to Russia since the beginning of the conflict. The last dialogue between India and Russia was held on December 6, 2021, when Putin visited New Delhi.

During the visit, Putin hosted Prime Minister Modi for a private meeting and dinner at his Novo-Ogarevo residence, clearly reflecting the importance Moscow attaches to the Indian leader’s visit. The two leaders were seen having a warm conversation in an informal setting. Putin also praised India’s development and PM Modi’s achievements.

President Putin also awarded the Prime Minister the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle for his contribution to promoting bilateral relations between the two countries. The award was announced in 2019.
