Another visit to Russia on the horizon? PM confirms attendance at BRICS summit in Kazan

Moscow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed to the Russian president Vladimir Putin its readiness to attend the BRICS Summit to be held in Kazan from 22 to 24 October, which will be the group’s first summit after its enlargement.

During a telephone conversation, the two leaders also discussed the implementation of trade agreements reached during the prime minister’s visit to Moscow in July, state news agency Tass reported, citing the Kremlin’s press service.

The two sides expressed satisfaction over BRICS cooperation and Prime Minister Modi “confirmed his readiness to participate in the integration summit in Kazan in October, held under the presidency of Russia,” the agency said.

Putin and Modi agreed to continue bilateral contacts and communication at various levels.

“The issues of practical implementation of the agreements in the trade and economic sphere reached during the official visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Russia in July were discussed,” the statement said.

Russia, the current chair of BRICS, will host the summit in its southwestern city of Kazan.

On January 1, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined BRICS, bringing the bloc to 10 members. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are founding members.
