Apple has officially submitted the outlined changes to bring iOS into compliance with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act, which came into force in the European Union earlier this year. The latest iOS 18.2 beta update allows users in that region to remove the App Store, Apple’s main platform for downloading apps, games, and more. Additionally, users now have the ability to uninstall Safari and other default apps that previously could not be removed.
The iOS 18.2 beta, currently available only to developers, allows users to replace Apple The default app for camera, web browsing, and downloading apps or games with third-party counterparts. That means users can remove App Store, Camera, Safari, Messages, and Photos and install apps from different developers to handle their respective functionalities. iOS 18.2 beta also brings a new menu, making it easier for EU users to select default apps for each functionality. You have options to set the default email app, messages app, calling app, web browser, password manager, and even the keyboard.
This is currently a requirement in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act. Previous beta versions of iOS 18 allowed users to remove native apps, such as Calculator, Music, Calendar, and Notes.
The most important change is the App Store, which is Apple The star application through which you distribute applications and earn a commission for each purchase. The ability to rely on a different app would deprive Apple of the control it has over iOS apps and the purchases made in them. EU users can download an alternative app market and start downloading apps from it. However, Apple has established a different mechanism for developers who take that route, requiring them to pay a fee, called the Core Technology Fee, for each first annual installation of their app that exceeds one million in a year.
