Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday accused the JMM-led alliance government in Jharkhand of pursuing a politics of “appeasement” in the state.
Sarma, BJP’s co-election in-charge in Jharkhand, on Saturday visited Bengabad in Giridih district to meet the family members of Havaldar Chouhan Hembram, who was murdered by a convicted prisoner at a hospital in Hazaribag on August 12.
“No legislator, either from the JMM or the Congress, has yet met the tribal victim’s family,” Sarma said after meeting Hembram’s mother.
Shahid Ansari, a life-sentenced convict, escaped from the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district after beating Hembram with a rod and strangling him to death with a saline tube. The accused was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The Assam Chief Minister alleged that the administration failed to take any steps to nab the absconding prisoner.
Sarma said when he came to know about the incident, he decided to meet the family with Jharkhand BJP chief Babulal Marandi on Saturday morning.
“When I reached here, I was told that the police had taken away Hembram’s family members early in the morning. They even took away his in-laws who live with them later. This government has crossed all the limits of appeasement politics,” Sarma said.
Sarma said he was told that the police had taken Hembram’s relatives to Hazaribag to complete some formalities. “If it is done for the sake of the victim, it is good,” he said.
The Assam Chief Minister said that when they reached the village, Hembram’s mother, who lives in another village, came to receive him.
“I assured the family that the BJP would try to provide them with all the help they need,” he said.
Sarma urged the Hemant Soren-led government to ensure immediate arrest of the accused.
“I request the government to arrest the accused immediately and ensure his execution by hanging. I also urge the government to provide employment to Hembram’s family members as per norms,” he said.
