The Assam government will introduce a bill in the upcoming autumn session of the Assembly for mandatory government registration of marriage and divorce of Muslim persons, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting, Sarma said the government will introduce the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024 during the next session, which will begin on Thursday.

“Earlier, Muslim marriages were registered by kazis. However, this new bill will ensure that all marriages in the community are registered with the government,” he added.

Sarma also claimed that underage marriages were earlier also registered by the Kazis, but the bill will ban any such measure.

“Now, child marriages will not be registered. We want to end the menace of child marriage. Therefore, marriages will be registered at the Sub-Registrar’s Office,” he added, citing cabinet decisions.

Sarma said there will be no restrictions on the rituals followed by Muslims during marriage ceremonies, but only registration by Kazis has been restricted.
