‘Average waiting time at security check… 256 minutes’: Videos of long queues at Delhi airport go viral

Amid heightened security measures ahead of the 78th Independence Day celebrations, Delhi Airport is witnessing long queues of passengers, leading to disruptions and considerable confusion over check-in protocols.

Several passengers have shared photos and videos of snaking queues at the IGI Airporthighlighting the “pathetic situation.” Some of them have even complained that the airlines have not sent any message about the current situation at Terminal 3.

Sharing her experience, Radhika Gupta, MD & CEO, Edelweiss Mutual Fund, said that she was stuck in a long security queue at the IGI Airport and managed to board the flight on time with the help of the airline staff.

While sharing a post on X, she wrote, “I saw this with my own eyes. A distraught airline staff member (don’t blame him) told me that the average wait time at security was 256 minutes. 256 minutes. I was lucky enough to get on the flight thanks to the kindness of @airvistara staff, but I hope the issue is sorted out.”

“There are long queues at security checks and even the Digiyatra queue is crowded for the first time. Glad I reached 2 hours early for my flight. Kudos to Delhi airport ground staff for free water bottles and police security for faster movement. Airlines recommend reaching 3 hours early, let’s follow their instructions. @MoCA_Go Should consider more arrangements for busy airports,” he wrote.

Another user added: “The situation at Delhi airport is very pathetic these days. Security check at CISF headquarters takes too much time, so there is too much rush in and out.”

Sharing a video of people queuing, a third person wrote: “This is not a railway station or a bus stand or a public park. This is our world famous Terminal 3 of IGI Airport in New Delhi. The waiting time for security is 2-3 hours. Passengers are increasing day by day but the resources are the same as before.”

Meanwhile, several users highlighted the “lack of resources” at the airport, despite the increase in the number of passengers.

What did Delhi airport say?

Amidst constant concerns from passengers, the Delhi Airport, Responding to an X user, he said, “Dear passengers, we understand your concern. Please be assured that our ground officials are making every effort to minimise any inconvenience caused to passengers and are working closely with CISF officials to make your travel experience at Delhi Airport a smooth one.”

He further noted that security at the airport has been tightened ahead of Independence Day on August 15. “Since then, the security screening procedure is taking longer. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to you,” he added.
