‘Avoid isolated areas, interact with kindness’: Silchar College advice for women sparks controversy

Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Assam has cancelled its previous notice issued in the wake of the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. A new notice will be issued soon on its official website.

In connection with the rape and murder case of a Kolkata doctor, the Silchar Medical College issued an advisory earlier this week. The advisory urged women doctors and healthcare workers to avoid situations where they would be alone and to refrain from venturing outside the campus at late or unusual hours. The advisory sparked a debate on the efficacy and implications of such measures in ensuring the safety of women.

The notice signed by the institute’s director and chief superintendent Dr Bhaskar Gupta said: “Female doctors, students and staff should, as far as possible, avoid situations where they are alone. They should refrain from leaving the residence or accommodation rooms during night hours unless absolutely necessary, with prior information to the competent authority.”

Critics have expressed concern about the recommendation, arguing that it places the onus on women to protect themselves rather than addressing the root causes of violence against them.

Association of young doctors SMC Demand the withdrawal of the consultancy

The Young Doctors Association demanded the withdrawal of the policy, calling it “scandalous”. We, the members of the Young Doctors Association of SMCH and the entire student fraternity of SMCH, are deeply saddened and ashamed. The recommendation, which does not address the key issues related to SMCH, is particularly targeted at women doctors and is outrageous. We demand the immediate withdrawal of the said recommendation and an official apology from the administration for its regrettable choice of words.

NMC calls on medical schools to develop policies for a safe working environment

In other news, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions, urging them to develop a policy for a safe working environment within university and hospital campuses for all staff, including teachers, students and resident doctors. The advisory comes in the wake of an alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata and resident doctors at several hospitals in the country going on strike in protest against the incident.
