Axiom Space and luxury fashion brand Prada have unveiled innovative spacesuits designed for astronauts participating in NASA’s Artemis III program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. The new outfits were showcased on Axiom Space’s website, highlighting the collaboration between cutting-edge space technology and high fashion.
Advanced materials for extreme conditions
The suits will be made of a white material that reflects heat and protects astronauts from extreme temperatures and lunar dust. According to the announcement, these durable suits will provide effective insulation for at least two hours in the coldest, shadiest environments on the Moon, allowing astronauts to perform spacewalks for approximately eight hours.
Redefining spacesuit development
Axiom Space President Matt Ondler emphasized the advancement in spacesuit design, stating, “Our elite teams have redefined spacesuit development, setting new paths toward innovative solutions and applying cutting-edge design.” The first prototype of these suits, presented in various colors, was revealed by NASA in March 2023.
NASA’s Artemis Program: a return to the Moon
NASA’s Artemis Program is an ambitious initiative to send astronauts back to the Moon, often called the “return to the Moon project.” The initial phase of the program, “Artemis I,” concluded successfully in December 2022 when the Orion spacecraft returned to Earth after orbiting the Moon.
Next, “Artemis II” will be the first manned mission of the Orion spacecraft, although it will return to Earth without landing on the lunar surface. This 10-day mission has faced delays until the end of 2025 due to safety concerns around the spacecraft, as well as challenges with the astronauts’ suits and landers.
If all goes as planned, the final phase, “Artemis III,” is scheduled to launch in 2026, bringing humanity one step closer to returning to the Moon.
