The Union government has extended the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), which covers all citizens above the age of 70 years, irrespective of their income. This extension is aimed at providing health insurance coverage to 5 lakh per family per year to approximately 4.5 million families, benefiting around six million senior citizens.

1) Eligibility and benefits

Regardless of their socioeconomic status, all citizens over 70 years of age are eligible to receive the benefits of the AB PM-JAY program. They will receive a new, distinctive card to access the plan.

2) For those already covered by AB PM-JAY

Elderly people People aged 70 years or older who are part of families already covered by AB PM-JAY will receive additional coverage of up to 5 lakh per year specifically for them. This amount is separate from the shared coverage with younger members of the family.

3) For those with other public health insurance plans

People above the age of 70 years who are currently availing of other public health schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) have the option to continue with their current cover or switch to AB PM-JAY.

4) For private health insurance holders

Yes, it has been clarified that adults aged 70 or older under a private regime health insurance policies will be eligible to avail benefits under AB PM-JAY, said Pankaj Mathpal, MD and CEO, Optima Money Managers.

5) How it works

Eligible senior citizens will be issued a specific card under AB PM-JAY, which they can use to access their health insurance coverage. If multiple senior citizens in the same family are covered, each will benefit from a separate card. Annual coverage of 5 lakh.

AB PM-JAY remains the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme, offering comprehensive secondary and tertiary hospitalisation coverage to 55 million individuals or 12.34 million families. The scheme covers all eligible family members, regardless of age.
