Bad roads make a mockery of the intelligence of smart cities

Rourkela News: Rourkela has the title of a smart city, but the residents of the city have not reaped its benefits till date. What has marred the smartness of the smart city the most are the roads in the city. The roads from Hockey Chowk, considered the gateway to the city, to the Corporation area are in a bad condition. Due to rains in the city for three consecutive days, the poor work done in road construction is also exposed. The condition of many roads is so bad that it seems as if they have gone into a coma. God is the master of the drivers plying on these roads. The condition of several roads from the ring road to the Rourkela Municipal Corporation area has gone from bad to worse. There are so many large potholes on these roads that due to accumulation of rainwater, they give the impression of small artificial ponds. There are dozens of potholes on the roads near Shitalpada on Ring Road, near Hanuman Vatika Chowk and near Trishakti Dham. Due to this, four big potholes have formed on the Ring Road near Shitalpara. Here too, the asphalt of the road has disappeared. So the safe passage of drivers from here is considered a grace of God.

Risk of accident due to filling of pits with water

Many potholes are also seen near Hanuman Vatika Chowk. Due to the accumulation of rainwater here, these potholes increase the risk of accidents. The big pit near Trishakti Dham gives the feel of an artificial pond after being filled with water. What is interesting is that on these three roads, a signboard reading ‘Rourkela welcomes you’ has been put up at one place, while a signboard reading ‘I Love Rourkela’ has been put up at another place. But the condition of the roads is so bad that instead of making the city dwellers happy, the ‘Welcome to I Love Rourkela’ signboard is becoming a reason for discontent. Apart from these three places, the condition of the roads at different places in the city is more or less the same.

The Bandamunda-Rourkela main road is in poor condition, which is prone to accidents.

Due to continuous rains in the city for the last three to four days, the Bandamunda-Rourkela main road has become deadly. The potholes on the road have become deeper during the rains. The situation is such that due to filling of water, the ditches several metres wide are not visible. So the fear of accidents continues to exist. Many times people get injured by falling on them. There are deep potholes on the D-cab while going from Bandamunda to Rourkela. Deep potholes have formed in front of the police station, in front of the main chowk of sector C, in front of the main chowk of the Institute, the main road of sector B, the main chowk of sector A, Sheetal Nagar, the railway bridge of Diesel Colony and the Diesel Colony Chowk, Tilka Nagar, in front of the broken pipeline. The condition of the Bandamunda-Rourkela main road is so pathetic that it is becoming increasingly difficult to pass through it. Therefore, there is a demand from departmental officials to pay attention to the repair of these roads.
