Badlapur sex case: High Court takes suo motu cognizance, hearing to be held on Thursday | India News

Badlapur sexual abuse case: The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls at a school in Badlapur town in Thane district of Maharashtra. A division bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan will take up the matter for hearing on Thursday.

On Tuesday, a mass protest in Badlapur erupted following the alleged sexual assault of two female students by a nursery assistant. On Wednesday, authorities suspended internet services in the city. Police said they had arrested 72 people in connection with the violence during the riot. The assistant, who was arrested on August 17, allegedly assaulted the girls in the school bathroom. On Wednesday, a local court extended his police detention until August 26.

The government has ordered the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) headed by senior IPS officer Arti Singh to probe the alleged sexual assault on the KG students. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also assured that action will be taken against the school, adding that the case will be dealt with expeditiously and the culprits will not be spared.

While the school management suspended the principal, a class teacher and a teacher assistant over the incident, the state government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of three police officials, including a senior police inspector, for alleged dereliction of duty in investigating the sexual abuse of the two girls.

Opposition parties have alleged that the girls’ parents had to wait for 11 hours at the Badlapur police station before officials took note of their complaints.
