The situation in India’s neighbour Bangladesh has not yet become normal. Bangladesh’s Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has resigned on the demand of the protesters. Today the protesters surrounded the Supreme Court in Dhaka and gave an ultimatum to all the judges including the Chief Justice to resign by 1 pm. After this, the Chief Justice submitted his resignation after consulting President Mohammad Shahabuddin.
Professor Asif Najrul, Advisor on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, said that the Law Ministry has decided to withdraw all cases registered between July 1 and August 5 to suppress the recent protests of students and citizens. This step will be taken within the next three days.
Earlier, Chief Justice Hasan had called a meeting with all the judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court. But, seeing the protest of the students, Chief Justice Hasan postponed the meeting and later said that he would resign.
Bangladesh Army personnel were deployed in the Supreme Court premises as hundreds of protesting students gathered. At around 1 pm, army personnel were deployed in the main building, annex building and other areas around the Supreme Court. They urged the protesters to maintain peace and called upon them not to damage government properties.
According to The Daily Star report, Chief Justice Hasan told journalists at the apex court premises that he has decided to resign keeping in mind the safety of the judges of the Supreme Court, High Court and lower courts amid the situation in the country. When asked whether other Supreme Court judges will also resign, Obaidul Hasan said that this is his decision.
