Bangladesh’s ousted PM Sheikh Hasina demands ‘justice’ and seeks inquiry into recent killings

Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday (August 13) demanded “justice” and said those involved in recent “terrorist acts”, murders and vandalism must be investigated, identified and punished.

In her first public statement since her ouster on August 5, Hasina, 76, said several lives have been lost in violence in the name of the unrest since July.

“I express my grief over the deaths of students, teachers, police personnel, pregnant women, journalists, cultural activists, workers, leaders and employees of Awami League and its allied organisations, pedestrians and employees of various establishments,” Hasina, who is currently in New Delhi, said in a statement in Bengali posted by her US-based son Sajeeb on Wazed’s X account.

“I stand in solidarity with those who, like me, continue to live with the pain of losing loved ones. I demand a proper investigation to identify those involved in these murders and terrorist acts and appropriate punishment for them,” Hasina said, recalling the brutal killing of her family members on August 15, 1975.
