Banks will remain closed on Monday, August 26 in certain parts of the country due to Janmashtami as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.
Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla and Srinagar.
It should be noted that holidayPublic holidays vary by country, so customers should check the list of public holidays at their nearest bank branch.
All bank holidays are mentioned in the annual holiday calendar declared by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in accordance with the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act. This Act regulates the issuance of cheques and promissory notes. Transactions involving these instruments are not available during such holidays.
However, all banks will continue to operate their online and mobile banking applications regardless of bank holidays, although customers should check the latest notifications for availability of such services. Customers can also withdraw cash from bank ATMs.
Janmashtami 2024
Janmashtami Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. This festival is usually celebrated in August according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Lord Krishna is believed to be the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
On this day, devotees fast, sing devotional songs and reenact the life of Krishna. They also stay up late on the eve of Janmashtami as it was believed that Lord Krishna was born at midnight. The idol of Lord Krishna, along with temples and houses, are decorated with flowers and colours.
In some parts of the country, Dahi Handi is organised to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. This event reflects Lord Krishna’s love for dairy products and his playful nature.
In other parts of the country, the life and actions of Lord Krishna are depicted through ‘Krishna Leela’, which is a dance drama depicting his childhood and other adventures. These celebrations are also accompanied by colourful processions, music, dance and chanting.
In the month of August, banks have seven designated holidays, excluding weekends.
