New Delhi: As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) expands its probe into the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old post-graduate doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Legislative Assembly LoP Suvendu Officer wrote to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and the Union Home Minister amit shah on Thursday, requesting them to withdraw/deposit the Presidential Police Medal and Police Medal conferred on Vineet Goyal, present Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, alleging disgraceful conduct during the course of investigations.

In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari shared, “I have written a letter to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu Ji, requesting her to withdraw/surrender the prestigious Presidential Police Medal and Police Medal conferred on Vineet Goyal; IPS, (West Bengal: RR – 1994), presently Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in connection with his reprehensible, deplorable and shameful conduct during the course of investigations into the rape and murder of resident doctor, RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.”

Suvendu Adhikari further alleged that Goyal’s complicity in the destruction of material evidence and deliberate inaction during the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14, 2024 has been well documented in the media.

“His brazen attempts to sabotage investigations into what is arguably the most heinous and sensitive crime in the country today to pander to the whims of the state’s political executive, with a view to camouflage the financial and moral fraud going on in the health sector in West Bengal, render him unworthy of retaining such awards,” it said.

Adhikari said the Commissioners’ actions have tarnished the formidable reputation of the Kolkata Police, diligently built over 168 years, and brought shame to the West Bengal Police.

“His activities, carried out with the intention of protecting certain influential persons, have further aggravated the already precarious law and order situation in West Bengal. He has brought great embarrassment to the state and the nation and the state is furious as he is perceived by the civil society as the embodiment of all that is wrong in the state of West Bengal,” he added.

He further said that he had also urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene in this regard.

“I have also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah Ji requesting him to intervene in this regard and also kindly censure the WB State Government for not taking appropriate action in terms of the notification issued vide memo no.11026/02/2017-PMA dated 29.05.2017 by Police Division-I, wherein the State Governments were directed that any incident of non-compliance with the guidelines relating to withdrawal/forfeiture of Presidential Police Medal and Police Medal would be treated as gross misconduct,” Adhikari added.

Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday evening, a family member of the victim in the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case accused the Kolkata police of trying to offer them money when they were crying and sitting with the mortal remains of their daughter inside the house.

“When the daughter’s body was lying in front of the parents at home, the police offered them money. Is this the humanity of the police?” said the aunt of the deceased doctor.

Accusing the Kolkata Police of “failing to fulfill their responsibility”, the deceased doctor’s aunt said that as soon as the last rites were performed, the police personnel left the family alone and became completely inactive, but before the rituals, around 300-400 police personnel surrounded the family.
