Bengaluru traffic: Railway line from airport to Yelahanka to be doubled, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans to double the railway line from Bengaluru airport to Yelahanka to improve traffic capacity. Expressing his commitment to collaborate with the Bengaluru airport authorities to locate the railway station closer to the arrival and departure areas of the airport, the Railway Minister said that talks will soon begin with the Bengaluru Airport Authority to relocate the station as close to the departure and arrival (of the airport) as possible.

During a visit to assess the redevelopment of the Bengaluru Cantonment railway station, Vaishnaw shared that the railways would soon begin large-scale production of the upgraded Amrit Bharat version 2.0 trains.

“We have decided that we will work with the Bengaluru Airport Authority and try to bring the station as close as possible to the departure and arrival (of the airport). We will start talks,” he said after inspecting the Kempegowda. International airport train station.

The minister highlighted the importance of the doubling initiative and said: “We will double the railway line from the airport to Yelahanka so that a large (traffic) capacity is created and then we will have the metro very quickly.”

Regarding the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), he noted that both corridors are progressing rapidly, offering commuters multiple options to significantly increase traffic capacity in the city.

Discussing the recently launched NaMo Bharat Rapid Rail by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vaishnaw mentioned plans to introduce these trains for shorter distances, including routes like Bengaluru to Mysuru and Bengaluru to Tumakuru. “These trains are for cities close to each other like Bengaluru and Mysuru. The distance between Bengaluru and Mysuru is 135 km, an ideal distance for a fast train, so that we can run at a very good frequency,” he explained. .

Regarding the redevelopment of the Cantonment railway station, Vaishnaw said progress is on track, with plans for almost 18,000 square meters of new area. He noted that the underground parking will have capacity for 250 cars and the same number of two-wheelers.

Additionally, he reviewed the Circular Rail project, which he believes will transform transportation in the city. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is progressing well and is expected to be completed by the end of December, after which further steps will be initiated.
