Bharat Bandh today; Dalit and Adivasi groups call for a nationwide strike | LIVE

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a massive protest against the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government following the brutal rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College. The protest is scheduled to take place from noon to 9 pm in the area.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday came out strongly against the West Bengal government over the Kolkata rape and murder case, saying that the country cannot wait for another such crime to take place for real changes to take place. The top court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a preliminary report on the case to the court in a sealed cover.

Dalit and Adivasi groups have announced a peaceful strike dubbed “Bharat Bandh” for Wednesday. They are protesting to demand more employment and education opportunities for marginalized communities and to protect their constitutional rights.

The strike follows a recent Supreme Court decision on how quotas are divided for scheduled castes (SCs) and scheduled tribes (STs), and ongoing debates on adding new posts in the central civil services.

Champai Soren, former Jharkhand chief minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader, was warmly welcomed by his supporters upon his return to his hometown Seraikela Kharsawan on Tuesday evening.

His return from Delhi has sparked rumours that he might join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These rumours have been fuelled by Soren’s recent comments, which show his dissatisfaction with both the BJP and the current coalition government.

As parts of Delhi again faced severe waterlogging following a spell of heavy rains on Tuesday, the BJP slammed the AAP government and its agencies, accusing them of turning the city into a “slum”.

The Aam Aadmi Party, in turn, blamed bureaucrats for the waterlogging problems, saying they failed to comply with their minister’s instruction to provide desilting reports, and lashed out at Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for not taking action against officials who failed to clear drains.

He said that much before the monsoon hit Delhi, Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to provide the report on desilting of drains by various agencies including the MCD, PWD, NDMC, DDA, Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
