Big boost for Modi govt: BJP-led NDA regains majority in Rajya Sabha with 12 members elected unopposed | India News

In a boost to the Narendra Modi government, the National Democratic Alliance government has secured a majority in the Rajya Sabha, crucial for the passage of many bills. The ruling NDA secured a majority in the Rajya Sabha today when nine BJP members and two from allied parties were elected unopposed in the upper house by-elections. The majority will help the NDA pass key bills like the Waqf Amendment Bill once it is taken up in the upper house.

With these new members, the BJP has 96 MPs, taking the total number of NDA members in the Rajya Sabha to 112. Apart from the nine BJP MPs, three more members were elected unopposed – one from Ajit Pawar’s faction in the NCP, one from the Rashtriya Lok Manch, both allies of the NDA, and one from the Congress. The ruling coalition also has the support of six nominated members and one independent member. Thus, in case of a poll, the NDA will have the support of 119 members.

There are currently 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha, though there are eight vacant seats – four from Jammu and Kashmir and four nominated seats. With the current composition of the House of 237 members, the majority threshold stands at 119.

Meanwhile, a Congress member was also elected, taking the opposition’s strength in the Rajya Sabha to 85. Abhishek Manu Singhvi of Congress was elected unopposed from Telangana.

Among the BJP candidates who were elected unopposed were Mission Ranjan Dass and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Chadhary from Haryana, George Kurien from Madhya Pradesh, Dhirya Sheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan and Rajeev Bhattacharjee from Tripura. Nitin Patil of the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP won a seat from Maharashtra, while Upendra Kushwaha of the Rashtriya Lok Manch was elected to the upper house from Bihar.
