Patna: In a significant step towards improving the safety of women travelling alone, Bihar The US Department of State has introduced a new initiative called “Safe Travels” which aims to provide real-time surveillance and protection. This initiative, which is part of the state police emergency services, is scheduled to begin as a pilot project in six districts and is expected to be implemented statewide by mid-September.
The launch of this safety initiative comes at a crucial time as the festival season, which begins with Durga Puja, approaches. It also comes in the wake of recent high-profile incidents, such as the tragic rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, which have raised national awareness about women’s safety.
How the ‘Safe travel‘The initiative works
Under the ‘Safe Travel’ initiative, women travelling alone in Bihar can ensure their safety by simply dialling 112. Upon making the call, a police team will record the details of the vehicle in which the woman is travelling and track the entire journey. Women can also share their real-time location with the police. Bihar Police for better surveillance.
The surveillance system works both physically and digitally. Local police stations will be on high alert and specially trained police teams will make regular calls to check on the traveller. If the woman’s phone becomes unavailable, an emergency response vehicle will be sent to physically locate the vehicle.
Pilot project and expansion
The initiative will be initially launched as a pilot project in six districts – Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Nalanda. The pilot programme is scheduled to begin on September 5 and is planned to be extended to all 38 districts by September 15.
State impact and police statement
Deputy Director General Nirmal Kumar Azad highlighted that approximately 25% of calls received on the 112 emergency service are made by women, underlining the need to strengthen safety measures. “The Safe Travels initiative will be available round the clock and is designed to provide immediate assistance and peace of mind to women travellers,” said Azad.
The Bihar Police initiative follows similar programmes implemented by Telangana and Haryana, making Bihar the third state to adopt such a system focusing on road travel.
With this new system, Bihar aims to offer a safer travel experience for women, reinforcing the state’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and ensuring safe travel for all its citizens.
