BJP distances itself from Kangana’ remark on farmers, Congress demands her expulsion

After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) distanced itself from its MP Kangana Ranaut’s controversial comment on the farmers’ protest, the Congress on Monday demanded that Ranaut be expelled from the party if the BJP disagrees with her remarks.

Supriya Shrinate, the Congress’s social media chief and spokesperson, asked the government to clarify Ranaut’s claims that the US and China were conspiring to destabilise India.

Speaking at a press conference, Shrinate said, “Till date, no leader has used the words that Kangana Ranaut has used against farmers. When Kangana’s statement sparked outrage, the BJP was asked about its official stance.

“Haryana elections are coming up and it is known that the BJP is going to lose. In that situation, the BJP issued a statement expressing its disagreement with Kangana’s comments,” Shrinate said.

The Congress spokesperson said that if this is not the view of the BJP, then Kangana should be expelled from the party. “Whoever has said this about farmers has no right to sit in Parliament. Tell Kangana to apologise to the farmers or the BJP should apologise,” Shrinate added.

Ranaut, who represents Mandi in the Lok Sabha, sparked controversy by suggesting that the farmers’ protests could have led to a situation similar to Bangladesh if there was no strong leadership. She also alleged that China and the US were working against India’s interests.

In a video shared on social media platform X, Ranaut claimed that “there were dead bodies hanging and rapes taking place” during protests against the now-repealed farm laws.

In response, the BJP issued a statement saying, “The statement made by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut in the context of the farmers’ movement is not the opinion of the party. The Bharatiya Janata Party expresses its disagreement with the statement made by Kangana Ranaut.”

The party clarified that Ranaut is not authorised or permitted to speak on party political issues and has been directed not to make such statements in future.

Shrinate further criticised the BJP, suggesting that if Ranaut’s claims about foreign powers conspiring against India are true, then the government is weak. He demanded that the government provide an explanation and claimed that either Ranaut should apologise to the farmers or the BJP should issue an apology on their behalf.

“Your (BJP) MP is saying that two foreign powers, the US and China, were conspiring to create instability and unrest in India. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs should say whether this is true. If it is not true, then the government should declare that it is not so,” the Congress leader said.

The BJP reaffirmed its commitment to social harmony and the principles of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas” in its statement.

“On behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Kangana Ranaut has been directed not to make any such statement in future… The Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to following the principles of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas’ and social harmony,” it added.
