Haryana Elections 2024: Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh came down fiercely on Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia and said, the Congress used both the players as pawns. In this case, the BJP high command has clearly refused to let Brij Bhushan Singh give any statement about the players. The BJP high command has given strict instructions that Brij Bhushan Singh should not make any statement against Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia.

Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Saturday said that the Congress used wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia as pawns in its conspiracy to take over the WFI and attack the Bharatiya Janata Party. A day after Olympian wrestlers Phogat and Punia joined the Congress, BJP leader Singh said here that he had defeated Congress’ Deependra Hooda in the 2012 WFI elections and so he has a grudge against them.

Asked about Phogat and Punia, the two prominent faces of the protest against Singh over sexual harassment allegations, he said they were faces… they were pawns. (Former Haryana Chief Minister) Bhupendra Hooda, the Congress and the Congress family used him as pawns. This whole thing was a conspiracy to take control of the All India Wrestling Federation and attack the BJP and its ideology. This Rahul team, the Congress, continues to do this kind of work. Singh first got control of WFI in 2012 after a tough contest with Hooda. He had control over the organisation until protests began last year against him for sexually harassing and intimidating women wrestlers.
Apart from Vinesh and Bajrang, Sakshi Malik also protested.
Phogat and Olympic bronze medallist Punia along with another Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik led the movement. As a result, Singh, a six-time Lok Sabha member from Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh, had to resign from the post of WFI chief and is also facing criminal charges in court. After his dismissal, his close aide Sanjay Singh was elected as the WFI chief, but the organisation is yet to receive recognition from the Sports Ministry, while the world governing body for wrestling, UWW, has supported it.
Phogat and Poonia said, the fight will continue.
After joining the Congress, Phogat and Poonia said they will continue their fight against Singh. Phogat had stated that no woman should endure what she had to endure. The Congress has fielded Phogat from the Julana seat in the Haryana Assembly.
