The BJP conducted a membership drive in 252 slums as part of its weekly jhuggis in the national capital as senior party leader Smriti Irani began her three-day organisational visit to the city.

Irani addressed BJP workers in Shahdara, Karol Bagh and New Delhi areas as part of the BJP membership drive.

The party’s membership drive in JJ groups was carried out under the leadership of Union Minister Harsh Malhotra and Alka Gurjar, co-in-charge of the BJP’s Delhi unit.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said people living in slums are enthusiastically joining the party as they are disappointed with the Arvind Kejriwal government.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the people of Delhi were firmly behind Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and termed the BJP’s membership drive in the city as a “big nautanki”.

Union Minister Malhotra conducted the membership drive at Indira Camp, Patparganj, along with party workers and said the party was trying to help slum dwellers have clean homes.

Gurjar recruited new members to the party in Shastri market and in settlements near Vasant Vihar. She said there is a strong attraction towards the BJP among poor women because they want to provide a good future for their children and the Kejriwal government has “let down” the slum dwellers.

Many senior BJP leaders including Delhi BJP Organising General Secretary Pavan Rana, MP Bansuri Swaraj and party workers were present at the membership drive held in the city.

The BJP has been holding events every Sunday as part of its outreach campaign in Delhi’s slums ahead of next year’s assembly elections.

Earlier this week, the party launched a membership drive to renew the membership of existing members and enroll new members.

In her address to BJP workers, former union minister Irani highlighted key points that they can discuss with people when they take the membership drive to every household, according to a statement from the Delhi BJP.

“Today, after participating in the BJP’s national membership drive, I am pleased to see the extensive welfare work that the BJP government is doing for the poor across the country,” Irani said.

He further said that a large number of citizens are joining the BJP and becoming members.

The AAP, in a statement issued on Sunday, said CM Kejriwal has transformed the infrastructure of the unauthorised colonies.

As the elections approach, the BJP may go on a “big nautanki” but the people of Delhi remain steadfast in their support for Arvind Kejriwal, the statement said.

Kejriwal quit his job in the IRS, lived in slums and understood the plight of economically disadvantaged sections, he said.

“When he took over as prime minister, he ensured that water pipelines were installed in all 1,800 unauthorised settlements,” the statement said.

Before his leadership, these colonies did not even have access to basic amenities like water, but in less than a decade, Kejriwal has transformed Delhi’s infrastructure by constructing roads in the unauthorised colonies, he claimed.

“Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recognised the urgent need for quality education for children from slum areas, giving rise to Delhi’s famous education revolution. Today, children of drivers, labourers and sanitation workers are getting admission into prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology and pursuing careers as doctors, engineers and lawyers,” the statement said.

“While no previous government cared about the health of the economically disadvantaged, the AAP government has built 550 mohalla clinics, including special pink mohalla clinics for women, ensuring healthcare for all,” he said.
