BMW explores humanoid robotics with Figure 02

BMW has launched a collaborative initiative with California-based robotics company Figure to evaluate the potential of humanoids. robots in Car manufacturingThe German automaker recently conducted a test of Figure 02, a next-generation humanoid robot, at its Spartanburg assembly plant.

The aim of the test was to assess the robot’s capabilities in performing subassembly tasks, specifically inserting sheet metal components into clamping fixtures. Figure 02 demonstrated precision, dexterity and the ability to seamlessly interact with its environment, which impressed BMW engineers.

While the test results were positive, BMW stresses that integrating humanoid robots into its production process is still in the exploratory phase. The carmaker is currently focusing on collecting data and refining the technology in collaboration with Figure.

“The developments in the field of robotics are very promising,” says Milan Nedeljkovic, Member of the Board of Management for Production at BMW. “With a preliminary test, we are determining the possible applications of humanoid robots in production. We want to accompany this technology from development to industrialisation.”

The long-term vision is to deploy humanoid robots in tasks that are considered ergonomically challenging or physically demanding for human workers. This aligns with BMW’s broader iFactory initiative, which aims to optimize production processes through advanced technologies. However, the company clarifies that there are no immediate plans to introduce Figure 02 robots at the Spartanburg plant.

As research and development progress, the potential for human-robot collaboration in automotive manufacturing becomes increasingly tangible.
